New Hampshire Lawmakers Lose Grip, Waste Taxpayer Money
New Hampshire House Speaker Bill O'Brien's dictatorial attitude hasn't helped him pass "right to work" for less laws, collective bargaining restrictions or a voter ID law. Today, that heavy hand came back to haunt him in major ways.
It started when O'Brien—a first-term speaker and hardcore tea party member—tacked a bill allowing employers to call union decertifications onto an unrelated bill over the objections of both Republican and Democratic legislators. That bill passed the House 195-137—not a veto-proof margin.
The atmosphere got uglier when O'Brien unexpectedly decided to take up a voter ID bill. After O'Brien attempted to silence a number of lawmakers who wished to testify against the bill, Republican Rep. Steve Vaillancourt shouted, "Sieg Heil," and saluted the chamber.
O'Brien then threw him out of the House chamber and appointed an apology committee to force Vaillancourt to apologize.
But that didn’t end the day’s drama. A few hours later, O’Brien’s director of legislative services announced he was resigning, following accusations that he was reimbursed by taxpayers for travel to recruit Republican candidates for the state legislative elections this fall.
Whether it's campaigning on the taxpayer's dime or throwing legislators out of his chamber, O'Brien continues to make it clear that his leadership is all about politics—not creating jobs or helping Granite Staters.
