N.H. Senate Committee Not Really Sure Why It’s Passing 'Right to Work' Again

The New Hampshire Senate Commerce Committee has voted to pass the same version of the so-called right to work bill that failed to pass the legislature last year.

Is it déjà vu? Groundhog Day? A calculated political maneuver? Or an admission of just how tired everyone is of Speaker William O’Brien’s attempts to pass “right to work” for less at any cost?

It was clear today that the senators weren’t that deeply engaged—at least not enough to try to feign interests in the arguments from both sides.

Ed Foley, a business agent with Sheet Metal Workers Local 17, told the committee the bill has deeply upset the contractors that employ his workers. He offered to read to the committee no fewer than six letters from the contractors, but Sen. Russell Prescott declined.

It’s worth asking why a Senate committee wouldn’t want to hear from businesses on a bill that is supposedly meant to help those same business. It certainly couldn’t be that the hearing was running late: the senators were over and done in just under three hours.

Want more on the day’s proceedings? If you aren’t one of the tens of thousands of Granite Staters (senators included) who are sick of “right to work,” check out the Concord Monitor’s recap.
