AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Shuler Speaks to Ohioans on Labor Day
AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Shuler is in Toledo today to celebrate Labor Day with Ohio's working families.
"We honor and recognize the working men and women who built this nation through sweat, sacrifice and innovation," Shuler says. "We stand united in our belief that everyone deserves a voice on the job, a living wage and a workplace safe from harassment and abuse."
After marching in the annual parade in downtown Toledo and greeting the dozens of participating unions and community organizations, Shuler delivered remarks, along with Anita Lopez, Lucas County auditor and mayoral candidate, at the Electrical Workers ( IBEW ) Local 8 picnic in Rossford.
Says Shuler:
The productivity of working families has powered our regionās growth, but wage growth has not kept pace with our productivity. There is something fundamentally wrong with our economy. The problem boils down to stagnant wages and the lack of middle-class buying power. The way to fix it is to raise wages and labor standards for everyone who works in America.
We believe in extending a ladder to the middle class for all who play by the rules and work hard. Union and nonunion; low wage, blue collar and white collar; regardless of immigration statusāworkers are united in the belief that this should be the country of opportunity.
