Working Families Rally in Chicago for Immigration Reform

Hundreds of activists representing working families rallied in Chicago on Thursday in support of commonsense immigration reform with a path to citizenship. The event was held by the Chicago Federation of Labor, Instituto del Progreso Latino and the AFL-CIO.

International Women's Day: Coalition of Immokalee Workers March 200 Miles for Rights, Respect and Fair Food

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) embarked on a 200-mile march from Fort Myers, Fla., to Lakeland to raise awareness about the Fair Food movement that has encouraged growers and big tomato buyers (Subway, McDonald’s, Burger King and companies that provide food for dining halls, etc.) to agree to higher wages and other worker protections. The march, which goes from March 3-17, will end at Publix headquarters to put the pressure on supermarket industry leaders who continue to refuse these protections.

Las Vegas Taxi Drivers Struck the Yellow-Checker-Star Transportation (YCS)

Last Sunday, taxi drivers employed at Yellow-Checker-Star Transportation in Las Vegas authorized a strike, triggered by what they say are the company’s unfair labor practices by refusing to provide the union with information relative to collective bargaining. There are 1,703 drivers in the bargaining unit.

Industrial, Technical and Professional Employees (ITPEU) represents the taxi drivers and is an affiliate of the Office and Professional Employees (OPEIU). Unfair labor practice charges were filed by ITPEU/OPEIU Local 4873 on Friday, March 1.

Georgia Working Families Mobilize to Stop Anti-Worker Bills

Dozens of Georgia union members urged their state lawmakers to block several anti-worker bills now before the state House and Senate in the Georgia AFL-CIO’s annual Lobby Day Thursday. At the same time, they celebrated the passage of a resolution that honors Hurricane Sandy relief workers from Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 84 and Georgia Power who traveled to New Jersey and elsewhere to help repair and recovery efforts.

Working Families Rally for Safer Construction Work in Austin, Texas

Members of the Reagan High School band stopped rush hour traffic yesterday in front of the federal building in Austin, Texas, along with hundreds of advocates, community leaders, families and construction workers, as they celebrated the Workers Defense Project’s (WDP's) biannual Day of the Fallen.

New Jersey Van Takes Voter Registration to the Streets

If you're in New Jersey and trying to register your friends and family to vote, keep your eyes peeled for a bright green van. 

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is teaming up with Working Families United for New Jersey Inc. and coalition partners to debut a brand-new, state-of-the-art voter registration van, which will make it easy to register voters where they work and live and engage the community. Equipped with Internet access and computers, this van, according to the state federation, "allows us to take our entire voter registration operation to the streets and to engage communities in the democratic process."

Stop Paycheck Deception in Missouri

Last week we told you that paycheck deception and other anti-worker legislation formulated in the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC's) corporate-backed laboratories were moving in the Missouri legislature. Now paycheck deception is close to a Senate vote, and the Missouri AFL-CIO is urging Show-Me State voters to call their state senators—1-888-907-9711—and urge them to oppose S.B. 29.

Day of the Fallen: Workers Defense Project Rally and March in Texas

Twice a year, the Workers Defense Project (WDP) in Austin, Texas, celebrates the Day of the Fallen through an action march and rally. On Wednesday, Feb. 27, more than 600 community supporters, activists, advocates and construction workers are expected to attend and join in the call for good, safe jobs for Texas construction workers. The WDP and community allies will meet at the state Capitol in Austin and show elected officials why people working in construction deserve more than low pay and few benefits.
