New Tariffs Imposed on Chinese Solar Cells
China has been dumping solar cells on the U.S. market at artificially low prices, the U.S. Commerce Department ruled today, imposing stiff new tariffs of about 31 percent on 60 Chinese firms to provide U.S. manufacturers a fair playing field.
Seven U.S. companies lodged the complaint claiming Chinese firms dumped panels at below market prices, threatening U.S. jobs and ability to develop a stronger foothold in solar-related manufacturing.
Commerce’s preliminary ruling and the tariffs are subject to final decisions by the U.S. International Trade Commission—which previously indicated Chinese dumping was likely hurting the U.S. solar industry.
