Trumka to Global Leaders: Jobs, Not Cutbacks
Nations should create jobs and stimulate growth, not cut back government spending with ruthless "austerity" measures if they want to successfully get out of the economic crisis, said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka during a meeting of global leaders.
Every day we see the costs rise of continuing to follow the policies that led to the crisis. The financial sector needs to be the servant, not the master, of the world economy.
Speaking on behalf of workers from 33 countries at the meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, Trumka attacked destructive austerity policies and called for jobs and broad-based prosperity. Trumka and other labor leaders are part of the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) to the OECD.
