Robin Hood, Nurses Set to Rally in Chicago
Tomorrow in Chicago, nurses from across this country and global activists will rally and call on world leaders to adopt a Robin Hood tax on financial speculation by banks and financial institutions to create jobs and rebuild the economy that Wall Street broke.
The Day of Action, sponsored by National Nurses United ( NNU ), was planned to coincide with this weekend’s G-8 Summit of the eight top western economic powers, originally set for Chicago, and the NATO summit immediately following. But the G-8 moved to Camp David, Md., to avoid the large crowds of protesters expected.
During tomorrow’s rally at noon CDT, “Robin Hood” and a band of nurses will scour the trees and surrounding areas of Daley Plaza for the AWOL G-8 leaders who are more intent on helping banks and Wall Street high rollers than average working families who are bearing the brunt of severe austerity measures.
There also will be a special performance by Tom Morello , The Night Watchman. The rally will be streamed live on Ustream here .
The day kicks off with an international panel of speakers from seven nations discussing the global challenge by workers and communities against bank-imposed austerity measures. The 8 a.m. CDT forum also will be available on Ustream.
In the evening, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith will perform “Tell Us Where It Hurts, America’s Nurses Are Listening,” a theatrical piece derived from real-life stories of nurses and their patients gathered by NNU. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. CDT at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers ballroom. Smith portrays a nurse on the Emmy award-winning Showtime dark comedy “Nurse Jackie."
