AFL-CIO’s Silvers Named to SEC Investor Protection Panel
AFL-CIO Policy Director Damon Silvers has been appointed to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) new Investor Advisory Committee. The committee was created as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
The 21-member committee will advise the SEC on regulatory priorities, the regulation of securities products, trading strategies, fee structures, the effectiveness of disclosure and initiatives to protect investor interests and to promote investor confidence and the integrity of the securities marketplace
Silvers is a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board Standing Advisory Group, the Financial Accounting Standards Board User Advisory Council, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Corporate Governance Task Force. He also served on the five-member Congressional Oversight Panel created to oversee the implementation of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act.
Members include representatives from consumer groups, senior citizen organizations, investment firms, state regulatory agencies and academic institutions. Says SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro:
I look forward to their insight and recommendations as to how we can further the SEC’s critical investor protection mission.
