Saturday, Help Letter Carriers ‘Stamp Out Hunger’

This Saturday, you can “Stamp Out Hunger” by joining with the Letter Carriers (NALC) in their 20th annual food drive—the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Last year Letter Carriers collected more than 70 million pounds of food. All you need to do is collect canned goods and dry food, such as tuna, canned meat, soups, pasta, rice and cereal, and leave them in a bag or box by your mailbox. Your letter carriers will pick them up as they deliver your mail.

At a press conference today, NALC President Fredric Rolando said:

Helping to end hunger is really pretty simple, just leave a non-perishable food donation at your mailbox before Saturday's mail delivery, and we’ll do the rest. Letter carriers are committed to walk in your neighborhoods every day, delivering for America and Stamping Out Hunger.

AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker urged union members to “give generously again this year and let's break last year's record.”

When we hear about—and think about—the Americans who don't know where their next meal will come from, it breaks our hearts.  This fact is more heartbreaking when we realize how many of America's hungry are children—young kids with not enough to eat.  One in five children and four million seniors….One hungry person in American is one too many.

After letter carriers pick up your food donations, they will deliver the goods to local food banks, pantries and shelters to help needy families in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states and U.S. jurisdictions.
