Union members teamed up with the United Way California Capital Region Toilet Paper Drive in Sacramento in recent days, netting 177,451 rolls and breaking the United Way’s Certified Non-Profit Community Partners 2011 record by more than 52,000 rolls. The toilet paper was donated to local Sacramento homeless shelters.
Eighteen local unions either set up collection centers or made financial contributions. After the two for one match by a local janitorial firm, local unions contributed 47,691 rolls of toilet paper. This year, SEIU Local 1000 was again the top toilet paper contributor. With the two for one match, SEIU Local 1000’s donations added up to 37,500 rolls of toilet paper. AFSCME Local 146 and Machinists (IAM) Local 2182 also participated in the drive.
The toilet paper donations allow the homeless shelters and United Way partner organizations to donate more resources to their programs, instead of toilet paper for their facilities.
United Way Community Services labor liaison Greg Larkins says:
It was a great toilet paper drive once again this year, and it really continued to solidify the partnership we have here in Sacramento between organized labor and the local United Way.
