Community Development Enterprise Boosts D.C. Workers' Chance to Own Home
The family of Abe and Irene Pollin and Enterprise Homes Inc. broke ground on a new development offering affordable housing in Northeast Washington, D.C., in recent days. MetroTowns at Parkside: The Linda Joy and Kenneth Jay Pollin Community will offer 83 new three-bedroom townhouses that will be built to meet green building standards and create more housing for D.C.’s working people. In fact, employees of the District were given the first opportunity to purchase the homes.
Says Robert Pollin:
My father was driven by a desire to establish a community in the District of Columbia, where residents—especially those who work here—can find comfortable, safe and affordably priced homes. He knew MetroTowns at Parkside would offer that opportunity.
Enterprise Homes and the family of Abe Pollin also have been working closely with the Metropolitan Washington Council of the AFL-CIO and its affiliated unions to alert union members who work for the District about the opportunity to purchase the new homes. Council President Jos Williams says:
We are thrilled to be a part of this project and to get the word out to our members about this important opportunity. We have long seen the impact that the lack of affordably priced homes for District workers has had in our city.
Williams congratulated the Pollin family on bringing Abe Pollin’s vision to fruition.
MetroTowns at Parkside is a great development that will allow those who serve the city a real chance to live in the city.
MetroTowns at Parkside is a public-private partnership among the family of the late Abe Pollin, Enterprise Homes Inc., and the city of Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray joined members of the Pollin family at the groundbreaking and gave his thanks to “everyone who worked together to meet this development milestone."
The first homes are expected to be complete by early 2013. More information on the development is available at www.MetroTownsDC.com or 202-695-7232.
The community has received a lot of interest and twelve people signed contracts to purchase in the first week. The developers will continue to work with the Metro Council and area unions to alert union members about opportunities at Metrotowns at Parkside. The homes are affordably priced starting in the $200s and special financing is available.
