AFSCME Local 2985 members at Oakdale’s Iowa Medical and Classification Center stepped up their annual donation to Toys for Tots—by almost threefold, reported the Iowa City Press-Citizen

Local 2985 President Marty Hathaway presented a check for $4,500 to Toys for Tots in Johnson County earlier in December.

Hathaway says:

We believe that every kid needs a good Christmas, and we want to give back to the community.

In 2011, Local 2985 members donated some $1,500 worth of toys to Johnson County Toys for Tots in honor of six correctional employees who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Local 2985 gave $1,700 in 2012 and increased the donation again this year because union members were inspired to give more, says Hathaway.

The Press-Citizen reported:

Lt. Larisha Richardson, corps officer and pastor for the Johnson County Salvation Army and a Johnson County Toys for Tots representative, said the union’s large donation was quite a surprise.

“I did not realize it was going to be this much,” Richardson said. “I’m just so excited by the blessings we are receiving to help our community here.”

The toys were distributed Dec. 18 to the 507 area families.
