UAW Helps Build Garden Beds for Detroit Elementary School.

Munger Elementary School in Detroit will have a new garden, thanks to Ford employees and members of UAWLocal 600. As part of this year's Ford Global Week of Caring, UAW Local 600 will help build raised garden beds for Bridging Communities to support students at the school.

AFGE's Support Our Sisters Provides Bras for Domestic Violence Survivors

Support our Sisters collects bras for women transitioning from victims to survivors of domestic violence.

Amanda Schroeder, AFGE District 11's National Women’s Advisory coordinator and member of Oregon Young Emerging Labor Leaders (YELL), sends us this. 

AFGE District 11’s October Support Our Sisters community outreach project is just around the corner. October is both domestic violence awareness month and breast health awareness month. This action is being supported by several fellow unions.

United Way President Thanks Union Member for 'Changing the Arc of His Life'

We're kicking off the Labor Day weekend with a very special "thank you" message from United Way President and CEO Brian Gallagher, to a union member who changed his life. In the United States, we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in September to recognize the economic and social contributions of working men and women. This Labor Day, I’d like to recognize two groups of union members who are volunteering in support of United Way initiatives.

Erie Union Members Help Students Head Back to School with Free Haircuts, Backpacks

For the past six years, the Erie-Crawford Central Labor Council’s Community Services Committee has helped sponsor an annual “Back to School Free Haircut Day” in conjunction with Michael Hooks of Michael’s Hair Salon in Erie, Pa. In 2006, only 30 or 40 people showed up to the event. This year, it was more than 700.

This year, AFL-CIO Community Services liaison Ron Oliver says more than 700 children took part and, on top of the free haircuts from Hooks and a team of volunteer stylists, each child received a backpack of school supplies and a children’s book.

Georgia Unions Have Your Back, Bottom and Soles

Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council Community Services Committee joined Crossroads Ministries and collected 704 underwear items.

We all know unions have our backs on the job, but did you know they also have your bottoms and soles?

Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council Community Services Committee just completed a successful underwear drive where they netted 704 items (socks, belts, T-shirts, underwear and bras), which were delivered to Crossroads Community Ministries in Atlanta yesterday morning.

Washington Electricians Team Up to Bring the Hungry More Than Food

Dave McCord, a 25-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), is bringing his passion for riding bicycles and changing lives together. As the director of the IBEW Local 26 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC), McCord joined other electricians and union-organized contractors last April on a bike ride in Southern Maryland to benefit End Hunger in Calvert County.

Atlanta Falcons Players, Labor Council Team Up for Voter Registration Drive

If you live in the Marietta, Ga., area and haven’t registered to vote and are a football fan, you have a chance Wednesday to make your voice heard at the ballot box and meet members of the Atlanta Falcons and NFL Players Association (NFLPA). The players are pitching in with the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council for a voter registration event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches at 801 Church St., N.E.

Union Good Samaritan Makes Sure Money for the Homeless Not Gone with the Wind

A lot of us—I confess I’ve done it—have gotten distracted getting into the car and left something on the roof or trunk and driven off. That’s what Jane Corbett of Shrewsbury, Mo., did last week near St. Louis, with more than $800 earmarked to feed the homeless. Thanks to the fast action of Plasterers and Cement Masons (OPCMIA) member Ray Leuthauser and the generosity of his fellow union members, nobody missed a meal.
