Labor Day on Parade: How Working Families Celebrated

Colorado AFL-CIO thanked NHL mascot Bernie for all his hard work.

Last week we asked you to check out a Labor Day celebration nearby and thank the people whose work you appreciate by sending an e-card or video. Here’s a snapshot of some of the creative ways people celebrated Labor Day yesterday:

In Louisville, Colo., union members passed out Labor Day thank-you cards to firefighters, transportation workers and even Rocky, the NBA Denver Nuggets mascot, and Bernie the St. Bernard, mascot for the NHL Colorado Avalanche. View pictures on the Colorado AFL-CIO Facebook page.

Georgia Businesses Say, 'America Wants to Work'

Georgia Businesses Say, 'America Wants to Work'

An IHOP in Atlanta is sporting an "America Wants to Work" sign in its window. So is the auto-parts store and the bakery. Nearby, a cafe and Chinese eatery display the sign in their windows as well.

Through the efforts of Jimmy Hyde, who runs the UAW Global Institute, institute interns contacted area business owners who agreed to join in the nationwide union movement's campaign to Bring Jobs Home and put America's workers to work.

This is a cross-post from the California Labor Federation's blog, Labor's Edge, by Danielle Tipton.

Senate Republicans Say ‘Don’t Bring Jobs Home’

Senate Republicans Say ‘Don’t Bring Jobs Home’

Given the choice between supporting American workers or the corporations that ship U.S. jobs overseas, Senate Republicans sided with the job exporters today and blocked a vote (56-42) on the Bring Jobs Home Act. That’s not a surprise to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.):

It's no surprise Republicans are on the side of corporations making big bucks sending American jobs to China and India. After all, their presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, made a fortune outsourcing jobs, too.

Nevada has the highest unemployment rate at 12 percent and the highest foreclosure rate in the state. Workers in the building trades industry are experiencing 60 percent to 90 percent unemployment.

This is why Danny Thompson, Nevada State AFL-CIO executive secretary-treasurer, and local unions gathered outside the office of Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) last week to ask him to support the Bring Jobs Home Act (S. 3364 [formerly S. 2884]), which is expected to get a vote on Thursday. Watch the YouTube video here

Trumka: Mitt Romney 'Doesn’t Know a Thing About Responsibility'

Mitt Romney “doesn’t know a thing about responsibility,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will tell delegates of the Heat and Frost Insulators today in Las Vegas at their 2012 convention. Romney’s plan to better the wealthiest 1% of taxpayers at the expense of the middle class is not the kind of America we want.

It’s been made abundantly clear in recent weeks that Mitt Romney doesn’t share the values the majority of American workers hold.

The huge export of American jobs (some 6 million manufacturing jobs in the past decade) by U.S. corporations has become a focal point of the presidential campaign. Today, a new report from the Center for American Progress (CAP) outlines how Republican Mitt Romney’s proposals would:

encourage and further accelerate the outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries.

Get Smart, Pass the Bring Jobs Home Act

Get Smart, Pass the Bring Jobs Home Act

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) cut straight to the chase Friday at a Bring Jobs Home roundtable in Charleston.

We now give tax incentives for people who move jobs offshore. That's just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
