Arkansas Whirlpool Factory Closes, Unions Say “Bring Jobs Home”

Whirlpool Corp. closed its Fort Smith Arkansas refrigerator factory on June 29 laying off  826 hourly workers and eight salaried employees. More than a week later, a group of 30 union members, elected officials and political candidates met at the United Steelworkers hall in Fort Smith to voice support for the Bring Jobs Home Act

Find a Bridge Action Near You Nov. 17

Rebuilding the nation’s crumbling infrastructure of roads, bridges and highways is a sure-fire way to create jobs and boost the economy. Thursday, Nov. 17, union members, community allies and jobless workers will take part in a national Infrastructure Investment Day of Action at dozens of bridge around the country that are in desperate need of repair.

The Conservative-Created Jobs Crisis

Combine Friday’s dismal jobs report that showed the economy added just 80,000 jobs in October with recent unemployment reports and the evidence is clear that job creation is just not taking off.  If this recovery followed the pattern set by other recessions, the nation should be seeing about 300,000 new jobs every month.

Tell Your Senators: Pass the Rebuild America Jobs Act

This week, the U.S. Senate will take up the Rebuild America Jobs Act (S. 1769), which would create jobs immediately by investing $50 billion to repair and rebuild the nation’s roads, rails and airports, establish a national infrastructure bank to fund a broad range of projects and ask millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. All without adding a dime to the deficit.

18,000 City Bridges ‘Structurally Deficient’—Fix the Bridges, Ease the Job Crisis

A new report shows that more than 18,000 of the nation’s busiest bridges clustered in the nation’s metro areas are rated as “structurally deficient.” Overall, there are some 70,000 structurally deficient bridges, but those in the metro areas carry 75 percent of the traffic that must cross a deficient bridge each day, according to the report from Transportation for America.

Republicans Prefer Filibuster to Putting Americans Back to Work

All 46 Senate Republicans voted against President Obama’s American Jobs Act Monday evening. With 60 votes needed to end the Republican filibuster against the act that would create as many as 2 million new jobs and keep 280,000 teachers from being laid off. This bill is unlikely to see any other action.

America Wants to Work, Republican Senators Say, ‘No’

Today, Senate Republicans are set to go on record that they don’t support putting Americans back to work when they vote against President Obama’s American Jobs Act. By casting a ”No” vote, they also will oppose middle-class tax cuts and will refuse to ask the nation’s millionaires to pay their fair share.
