Forced labor and human trafficking exist in worksites and industries where workers’ rights are routinely violated and where a culture of exploitation reigns. In the tomato fields of Florida, more than 1,200 farm workers once toiled in conditions of forced labor. However, thanks to the organizing efforts of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), these workers now have respect on the job, higher wages and a say on the job.

More than 100 New Hampshire union members joined Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) for a get-out-the-vote Obama–Biden rally today outside Manchester’s Verizon Wireless Arena, where Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak tonight. Also at the rally were UAW President Bob King, New Hampshire AFL-CIO President Mark MacKenzie and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.).

With the deadline looming for members of a congressional “supercommittee” to decide how to cut the federal deficit by $1.2 trillion, local labor, religious and progressive activists took to the soapbox this week to petition Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the only member of the supercommittee from New England, to oppose any cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
