But when you take that adventure out of the world of fantasy and into the real-life boardrooms, corporate offices and Washington hideaways and the loot isn’t sparkling diamonds and gold bars but the homes, savings and jobs of regular working stiffs, you get “Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?

Now streaming live—and free—here, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Labor Day, “Heist” traces how American corporations orchestrated the dismantling of middle-class prosperity through rampant deregulation, the outsourcing of jobs and tax policies favoring businesses and the wealthy.

To fix what’s wrong with the U.S. economy, we have to replace the failed low-wage economic strategy of the past 30 years with a high-wage strategy for shared prosperity.

The first step in such a high-wage strategy is to put America back to work because high unemployment keeps wages down. Our goal should be “full employment,” meaning everybody who wants to work should be able to find a decent job. We can’t allow the unfounded fear of inflation to be used as an excuse to keep unemployment high and wages low.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka is taking part in the L20’s June 18-19 meeting in Los Cabos, Mexico. Leaders of the 19 nations and the European Union who make up the L20 are discussing the global economic crises.
