45 Years Later, AFSCME President Lee Saunders Reflects on Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike

In case you missed it, AFSCME President Lee Saunders and AFSCME members who were part of the sanitation strike in Memphis, Tenn., in 1968 were interviewed on "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams."

Working Families Rally to Oppose Cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid

More than 1,500 people rallied Tuesday on Capitol Hill in support of working families and to tell Congress not to make any benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. They also told Congress to close tax loopholes for big corporations and the wealthiest 2% and to prevent the sequester from going into effect and harming the country. Throughout the rally, working families spoke with a unified voice calling for "jobs, not cuts."

New Members Elected to AFL-CIO Executive Council

New members were elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council this morning. Sean McGarvey, president of the Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD), will fill the seat of former President Mark Ayers, and Laura Reyes, secretary-treasurer for AFSCME, will fill the seat of retiring AFSCME President Gerry McEntee. AFSCME President Lee Saunders was named chair of the Executive Council Political Committee.

Delegates to AFSCME’s 75th anniversary convention elected Lee Saunders as president and Laura Reyes as secretary-treasurer late yesterday. Public Employees Aiding Residents Throughout Irene

From the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), whose employess are represented by AFGE, to local workers answering emergency calls, government workers have been playing a major role in the cleanup effort of Hurricane Irene. Two of those workers, one in Rutland, Vt., and one in Princeton, N.J., lost their lives while trying to help keep their communiteis safe during the storm.

Caring Across Generations Campaign Kicks Off at First-Ever Care Congress

Emmelle Israel, a fellow in the AFL-CIO Media Department, writes about the founding of the Caring Across Generations campaign.

More than 700 care workers, care recipients, community activists and union members came together yesterday in Washington, D.C., for the first-ever Care Congress. The energy in the room was electric as everyone celebrated the launch of the Caring Across Generations campaign, a national effort to reform the direct-care industry. Care workers from across the nation were joined by Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Schuler and AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Lee Saunders. Each spoke about the importance of direct care work for the nation as a whole and even in their own lives.
