3.3 Million Would Lose Unemployment Under GOP Bill

According to an analysis released by the Department of Labor, 3.3 million Americans would lose unemployment insurance under H.R. 3630—the House Republicans’ so-called “compromise” bill that cuts coverage for jobless workers, cuts pay for public employees, cuts preventive health services, reduces premium assistance for low- and middle-income individuals buying health insurance and raises premiums for many Medicare beneficiaries.

South Carolina Activists Rally for Workers Outside GOP Debate

The following is adapted from the South Carolina AFL-CIO Blog by Russell Bannan.

More than 100 labor and community activists rallied for workers’ rights in Spartanburg, S.C., Saturday, in a one-mile march that ended at the site of the Republican presidential debates. The action called attention to the GOP’s blatant attacks on workers for exercising their rights of collective bargaining and freedom of association.

Who Opposes American Jobs, Kids?

Yesterday, President Obama was in Colorado highlighting his plan to put Americans back to work modernizing the nation’s aging schools and to make sure there are plenty of teachers to fill those schools. The plan involves $30 billion to put hundreds of thousands of Americans to work modernizing at least 35,000 schools across the country, and $35 billion to save the jobs of 280,000 teachers, police, firefighters and other first responders. American Progress puts the Republican opposition to the president’s plan in perspective.

How Republicans Crippled the United States Postal Service

“Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” reads the unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service.

I guess no one ever thought it would be the Republican Party finishing off the Postal Service when those words were borrowed from the ancient Greek and chiseled in granite over the entrance to the James Farley Post Office in New York City on Labor Day in 1914.
