Detroit’s Bankruptcy Czar Refuses Free Lunch Offer from City Pensioners

It wasn’t crab cakes and calamari delivered via room service to his tony penthouse paid for by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s (R) “ secretive nonprofit foundation ,” but Kevyn Orr, Detroit’s so-called emergency manager overseeing the city’s bankruptcy, turned down an offer of a free lunch.

Maybe he doesn’t have the taste for a down-home chili dog, but it’s more likely he didn’t have the stomach or backbone to dine with the retired city workers who invited him to lunch Monday. The retirees who, Orr has said, face “significant cuts” to pensions.

He’d been watching a crowd of 100 people singing when two police officers held up a powerful “long-range acoustic device” (also used to ward off pirates off the coast of Somalia) and the recorded voice of Capitol Police Chief David Erwin—Gov. Of all the good and important words that have been spoken in the past week about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the March on Washington, perhaps none are more remarkable than  Sybrina Fulton's  as she appeared on MSNBC Sunday morning:

"I think the most important thing that I can do is continue to fight and just be realistic and not expect things to happen overnight," Ms. Fulton told Melissa Harris-Perry. "It took a long time for everything to occur, so it's going to take just that time to try to get things on the right track. I'm giving my commitment not to give up until I'm resting in my grave....It's very important that we stick together, that we unite and we fight."

Workers Win Voice with AFL-CIO Unions

Emergency medical workers, massage therapists, bus mechanics and home health care workers are among the latest workers to choose a voice on the job with AFL-CIO unions. 

In California and Arizona, some 240 emergency medical services professionals voted recently to join United EMS Workers-AFSCME .

Detroit Unions Challenge City’s Bankruptcy Claims

Several unions representing Detroit city works and retirees challenged  Detroit’s claim for bankruptcy protection. The challenges were filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Detroit, the court which will determine if the city is eligible for bankruptcy protection.  AFSCME Council 25 said the city has not proven it is insolvent and has not negotiated in good faith with its creditors.

Alison Lundergan Grimes started her stump speech to union members, local Democratic Party officials and others in Paducah, Ky., with a quote from Sen. Mitch McConnell: “Public sector unions are a 50-year mistake. Unions are to blame for distrust of our government. Unions are power hungry and no longer serve the public interest.”

Then the 34-year-old Democrat who wants McConnell’s job lowered the boom:

He didn’t realize what he was describing was how Kentuckians feel about his service in Washington.

AFSCME’s Saunders Slams Lack of Communication in Detroit’s Rush to Bankruptcy

Before Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) and his hand-picked emergency manager Kevyn D. Orr rushed the city’s bankruptcy filing to federal court last week, they refused to sit down and discuss the future of the city’s workers and retirees, AFSCME President Lee Saunders said this morning on " The Bill Press Show ." He told Press:

They have not sat down and talked with the union at all in Detroit. They have refused to do so, to talk about how these issued can be resolved. They have said they’ve attempted to have these kinds of discussions. That is a bold-faced lie.

Judge: Detroit Bankruptcy Case Turns State Constitution to ‘Swiss Cheese’

The Michigan judge who ruled last week that Detroit’s bankruptcy filing violated the state constitution's  ban against tampering with public employees’ pensions, adjourned a hearing on the case this morning until July 29. Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said:

As you all know, my decision last week was because there’s been a violation of constitution. I don’t believe the constitution should be made of Swiss cheese.
