The Union Sportsmen's Alliance ( USA ) Adopt-a-Park initiative is ensuring that outdoor enthusiasts with mobility issues will be able take full advantage of a dedicated trail at Virginia’s York River State Park near Williamsburg.
The fifth season of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s ( USA 's) “ Brotherhood Outdoors ,” a unique hunting and fishing series that showcases the talents and passions of union members, kicks off at 11 a.m. EDT Sundays, starting July 7, on the Sportsman Channel . Encore airings will be broadcast on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.
The Union Sportsmen's Alliance ( USA ) Adopt-a-Park initiative is making sure hikers in Montgomery Bell State Park near Nashville, Tenn., have a safe new bridge to cross a 30-foot-wide creek. Volunteers from the Nashville Building and Construction Trades Council (BCTC) are spending weekends in May building a sturdy, permanent bridge to replace a small, temporary structure further down the creek after a 2010 flood washed away the original bridge.
On the heels of its successful “ Boots on the Ground ” outdoors rehabilitation initiative for hunting and fishing areas, the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance ( USA ) has launched a new “Adopt-A-Park” program to help renew, rebuild and restore the nation’s state parks.
A new season of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s ( USA 's) award-winning hunting and fishing TV show, “ Brotherhood Outdoors , ” is under way, and the next episode features Plumbers and Pipe Fitters ( UA ) Local 412 member Dan Reyes on a New Mexico elk hunt. It airs at 11 a.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 10, on the Sportsman Channel .
Under a white, wintry sky, nearly two-dozen union members volunteered to rebuild a 100-foot wooden bridge on a public trail in the Black Hills.
“When you’ve got skilled workers with the right tools, the work goes quick,” says Dana Garry, who manages the 109-mile Mickelson Trail for South Dakota’s Department of Game, Fish and Parks. In two days, the volunteers rebuilt abutments and replaced the bridge surface and railing. “It was just amazing,” she said. “These volunteers fill an important need.”
Retired Ironworkers Local 361 member John Sferazo, a longtime member of Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA), was honored for his contributions to conservation at the Field & Stream Heroes of Conservation gala on Oct. 4 in Washington, D.C.
After suffering physical and emotional trauma as a Ground Zero volunteer on Sept. 11, Sferazo has worked to provide free hunting opportunities for first responders and veterans with disabilities. With the support of 30 organizations, his nonprofit group American Greenlands Restoration Inc. has turned a former 1,000-acre asphalt plant site in Maine back into a thriving forest habitat. “Being outside gave me an outlet, and I wanted to give others the same,” he said. “It’s the right fight, at the right time, for the right reason.”
Sferazo was nominated by the USA. Currently in its seventh year, the program honors individuals involved in grassroots projects to preserve the land, water and wildlife vital to sportsmen’s pursuits.

Nearly 150 union members, shooting enthusiasts and other guests—including United Union of Roofers and Waterproofers President Kinsey Robinson , Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and state Attorney General Lori Swanson—teamed up to support conservation at the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s (USA's) second annual Roofers International Twin Cities Sporting Clays Shoot and Get Youth Outdoors Day on Sept. 15 and 16 at Wild Marsh Sporting Clays in Clear Lake.

As part of a Union Sportsmen’s Alliance ( USA ) Boots on the Ground project, volunteers from Painters and Allied Trades ( IUPAT ) District Council 30 helped put the finishing touches on a new facility that will host youth educational programs at the Torstenson Family Youth Conservation Education Center.
