Georgia Businesses Say, 'America Wants to Work'

An IHOP in Atlanta is sporting an "America Wants to Work" sign in its window. So is the auto-parts store and the bakery. Nearby, a cafe and Chinese eatery display the sign in their windows as well.

Through the efforts of Jimmy Hyde, who runs the UAW Global Institute, institute interns contacted area business owners who agreed to join in the nationwide union movement's campaign to Bring Jobs Home and put America's workers to work.

Tens of Thousands Rally Nationwide for Bridge Repair, Job Creation

From actions drawing thousands in major cities to those with dozens in smaller towns, working families, jobless workers, community members and Occupy activists across the nation yesterday marched and rallied at dozens of bridges in desperate need of repair and called on Congress put millions of Americans back to work rebuilding the nation’s crumbling bridges and roads.

Rebuilding the nation’s crumbling infrastructure of roads, bridges and highways is a sure-fire way to create jobs and boost the economy. Thursday, Nov. 17, union members, community allies and jobless workers will take part in a national Infrastructure Investment Day of Action at dozens of bridge around the country that are in desperate need of repair.

The forum is part of the AFL-CIO’s America Wants to Work National Week of Action on jobs and the economy.

Republicans Prefer Filibuster to Putting Americans Back to Work

All 46 Senate Republicans voted against President Obama’s American Jobs Act Monday evening. With 60 votes needed to end the Republican filibuster against the act that would create as many as 2 million new jobs and keep 280,000 teachers from being laid off. This bill is unlikely to see any other action.

From Oregon to Maine, America Wants to Work Actions Take Off

Yesterday in Coos Bay, Ore., near the U.S. McCullough Bridge where repair work is desperately needed on the 74-year-old span, Oregon union and community activists rallied to urge Congress to stop playing political games and start investing in important infrastructure projects, like the McCullough Bridge. The Oregon AFL-CIO says repairs stopped halfway across when funds dried up.
