78 Earn College Degrees, Graduate at National Labor College

Mark King  considers the bachelor’s degree in labor studies that he received Saturday at the National Labor College’s ( NLC 's) class of 2012 commencement as his “keys to the kingdom.”

King, a New Hampshire school librarian and AFT member, was one of 78 graduates from 25 unions and the AFL-CIO community affiliate, Working America, who received degrees at the Silver Spring campus. He was elected class speaker of the NLC’s 14th graduating class by his peers.

Young Workers Still Struggling to Find Jobs

As we noted back in August , one of the groups facing the toughest jobs climate right now are young workers, those who are new to the job market or about to enter it.

At the Economic Policy Institute’s Snapshot Blog, Heidi Shierholz writes that although the 16-24 demographic has seen some improvement in recent months, employment numbers for this group of young people remains rather dismal.

College Grads Face Worst Job Market in Years

Students graduating from college this spring will face the worst job market for graduates since the Great Depression, a new report says. “ The Class of 2011: Young Workers Face a Dire Labor Market Without a Safety Net ,” by the Economic Policy Institute ( EPI ), found that unemployment among workers between the ages of 16 and 24 is more than double the national average. In 2010, young workers averaged 18.4 percent unemployment, compared with 9.6 percent overall.
