Get a LIFT from Berger-Marks

The Labor Innovation Fund for the Twenty-First Century, aka LIFT, a collaborative project of the AFL-CIO with the Ford Foundation, the Solidago Foundation and the New World Foundation, was recently highlighted by the Berger-Marks Foundation. LIFT gives grants to partnership projects, “conversations around common agendas," and other efforts to link the union movement with community organizing focused on workers’ rights, decent jobs and a fair economy.

Gerard: Immigration Reform Prevents Employer Abuse

Oscar came to the United States at the age of 16 to work. There were no jobs for him in his native Guatemala, and he felt obligated to help support his parents.

He was lured across borders by the promise of work. He believed, as so many immigrants do, that there would be a job for him in America.

For the past five years, he has worked at a Los Angeles carwash that cheated him and other immigrant workers out of pay, refused protective gear and even denied drinking water.

Why I Care About Workers Memorial Day

This is a cross-post from the Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (SoCalCOSH).

Until just a few years ago, I never gave much thought to Workers Memorial Day. Sure, I understood that safety on the job was important, but that was something other people could worry about, it didn't have much to do with me. I was more interested in struggles to make sure people were paid fairly, so that they had enough money to put food on the table; that was the more important stuff.

When I started working on the CLEAN Carwash Campaign, that all began to change.

New York City Carwash Workers Launch Fight for Rights

NYC carwash workers

New York City carwash workers are following their Los Angeles counterparts to battle rampant mistreatment, wage theft and unsafe working conditions. Today the coalition, WASH New York, released a report—“The Dirty Business of Cleaning NYC’s Cars”—that details the long hours, low pay and dangerous conditions the city’s more than 5,000 carwash workers at some 200 carwashes face every day.

Calif. Carwashes Agree to $1 Million Back Pay Settlement

Eight California carwashes agreed to a historic $1 million settlement with the state’s attorney general for routinely failing to pay minimum wage or overtime, creating false records of work hours and not paying money owed to employees who quit, according to Attorney General Kamala Harris.
