New York University graduate employees—members of Graduate Student Organizing Committee UAW Local 2110—successfully capped a struggle that began at the turn of this century when they ratified a five year contract with the university. Lily Defriend, a Ph.D. candidate in the Anthropology Department said:
More than 1,000 Yale University graduate student employees, their allies and elected officials rallied on the Yale campus last week calling on the university’s administration to recognize their union and negotiate.
The UAW reports that graduate employees have reached an “unprecedented agreement with New York University in which the administration will remain neutral and respect the results of an election for more than 1,200 GAs, TAs and RAs [graduate assistants, teaching assistants and research assistants] to vote on union representation." The election is expected to take place Dec. 10 and 11.

Yet teaching and research assistants at NYU are experiencing exorbitant costs for their health plans through the university. Last year the cost of dependent care increased 33%.
More than 1,100 graduate student employees at New York University (NYU) and NYU-Poly have signed and delivered a letter to the university’s administration urging the school to respect their choice to join a union.
The letter was delivered in anticipation of a decision by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that could reverse a 2004 decision by the then Bush-administration-controlled NLRB holding that graduate teaching and research assistants at private universities were not employees protected by federal labor law.
