At Nissan’s Canton, Miss., plant, there are more than 3,000 workers who want a voice at work to improve conditions and secure decent work for more members of their community. Their campaign for justice has won support both locally and globally.

One of the growing groups backing the Nissan workers is Concerned Students for a Better Nissan. While the group has received great support from students at several colleges and universities, as this video shows, they found a more hostile reception outside a Nissan dealership when they decided to spotlight what workers say are the tactics Nissan is using to intimidate workers who are seeking a union voice.

Nissan technician Betty Jones sent this message to working family activists today:

I’m a technician at the Nissan plant in Canton, Miss., and I’m proud to work there. I want our company to succeed, and I never give anything less than my best.
And that’s one of the reasons my co-workers and I are organizing for a voice on the job. We believe that by organizing collectively we can work together with Nissan to make the company and our community better.

Unlike Las Vegas, what happens in Mississippi won’t stay in Mississippi, as far as Nissan is concerned. 

The president of the largest labor federation in Brazil, representing 7.4 million workers, got a close-up look at the situation in Canton, Miss., last week, when he attended the meeting at Tougaloo College that was attended by nearly 500 people, along with the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan (MAFFAN). 

Supported by global labor activists and unions, a Mississippi Nissan worker announced the UAW’s global organizing campaign yesterday at the third annual LabourStart conference in Sydney, Australia. At Nissan’s Canton, Miss., plant, there are more than 3,000 workers who want a voice at work to improve conditions and secure decent work for more members of their community. In addition to reducing safety problems and resulting injuries at the plant, workers want to unite to build power and raise their voice so that Nissan will directly hire more of its workforce and not depend so heavily on temporary workers. Nissan’s production model increasingly tries to avoid the responsibility of being an employer while reaping the gains of all production workers.
