Three Takeaways from Last Night's Presidential Debate

Mitt Romney continues to be disconnected from working families' priorities. Just take a look at his tax and jobs plans he touted during last night's second presidential debate. Romney insisted he could cut tax rates for the wealthiest earners across the board without increasing the deficit or raising taxes on working people. He also touted his five-point jobs plan, which President Obama called out for what it really is:

Gov. Romney doesn't have a five-point plan. He has a one-point plan. And that plan is to make sure that folks at the top play by a different set of rules. That's been his philosophy in the private sector, that's been his philosophy as governor, that's been his philosophy as a presidential candidate.

What's at Stake in the November 2012 Elections?

What's at stake for working families in the November elections? Try health care, retirement security and jobs, to name a few. Just ask Travis Turner's mom, who is so grateful for the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act made it possible for her son Travis, who has a rare form of liver cancer, to get back on his father's health insurance after he was kicked off for exceeding a lifetime limit. Mitt Romney plans to overturn the health care law, which helped the Turner family and millions of others receive health care

Labor School Readies Candidates to Win November Elections, Fight for Workers

This is sent to us by Charles Wowkanech, New Jersey State AFL-CIO president.

While tens of thousands of union and community supporters joined the Workers Stand for America rally in New Jersey to stand up for the voices of working men and women and economic opportunity for all, 22 labor candidates were learning about how to win their election in November so they can support workers in their local governments.

The 16th Annual Labor Candidates School, held last weekend, continues the New Jersey State AFL-CIO's long tradition of preparing and educating rank-and-file union members to run for elected office. The 22 students are representing 18 different local unions and a complete range of our state’s labor movement.

Romney's Record as Governor: F Minus

Romney's Record as Governor: F Minus

At a time when creating jobs in this nation is top priority, Mitt Romney is running for president on a record in which Massachusetts under his years as governor was 47th in job creation. Worse, Romney apparently didn’t care—when state customer service call center jobs were outsourced to India, Romney vetoed legislation to stop the practice.

This and more info on the Romney record are available at our new Meet Mr. 1% website.

Mass Protests in Mexico Challenge Fraudulent Elections

On July 1, Mexicans went to the polls to elect a president and Members of Congress. The stagnation of the economy, lack of opportunities for decent employment for young people and the terrible violence of the drug war were key issues motivating the voters.  Unfortunately, both the incumbent PAN party and one of the other challenging parties, the PRI,  support so-called labor law reforms that would undermine worker rights while weakening social protections.
