See the 'Cesar Chavez' Movie, Then Urge Obama to Establish Chávez National Day of Service

The new bio-pic "Cesar Chavez," about the legendary founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW) farm labor movement and influential labor leader, opens today nationwide. The opening comes just days before his March 31 birthday, which is celebrated as a state holiday in California, Colorado and Texas and recognized in many other states with celebrations and volunteer public service events.

United Farm Workers Launch #FieldFotos Online Action

The United Farm Workers (UFW) is launching a digital day of action today urging farm workers and supporters to support the Senate immigration bill (S. 744) and a road map to citizenship for aspiring citizens. 

Using the hashtag #FieldFotos on Facebook and Twitter, the UFW is asking supporters to share stories and images of farm workers online. Here are ways you can help, via the #FieldFotos campaign page:

César Chávez’s Home Designated National Monument

President Obama yesterday designated the home and burial site of the legendary United Farm Workers (UFW) leader, César Chávez, a national monument. Known as La Paz, short for Nuestra Senora Reina de la Paz, or Our Leady Queen of Peace, the site is in Kenne, Calif. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says the designation is a:

fitting tribute for a man whose campaign for civil rights and respect for workers struggling in the shadows broke new ground and left an indelible mark on the pages of American history.

Farm Workers Co-Founder Huerta Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

Jennifer Kauffman, AFL-CIO Immigration Policy & Training associate, sends us this. Labor and civil rights activist and icon Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, for her lifelong work fighting for economic justice and workers’ rights.
