See What You Missed from 'First Book' Event at AFL-CIO Headquarters

The AFL-CIO hosted a book distribution event last month, sponsored by First Book D.C. in partnership with the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, local collegiate chapters and Pi Beta Phi alumnae. In all, 40,000 books were given to teachers and non-profits serving children in need in Washington, D.C. Thanks to all the volunteers who participated in this important event. Join Teachers in Washington, D.C., this Saturday to Help Children Get Their 'First Book'

Anyone in the Washington, D.C., area interested in helping children learn to love reading? If so, come down to the AFL-CIO headquarters this Saturday and volunteer for the Books on Wheels event, sponsored by First Book. The AFL-CIO and the AFT will be teaming up with First Book on Saturday, April 26, between 6 a.m. and noon, to collect, sort and distribute books to area children.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers (an affiliate of the AFT) will be distributing 40,000 free books for Pittsburgh Public School students as part of the First Book program. First Book is designed to provide access to new books for children in need.

Cleveland Teachers Give Thousands of Books to Local Latino Families

The impact of a child owning a book cannot be overstated, which is why on July 25, the Cleveland Teachers Union (CTU) partnered with community group Esperanza to donate more than 6,000 books to Latino families in the area. The event was held in conjunction with the First Book National Book Bank and was part of a community fair that included face painting, hot dogs and other activities organized and staffed by CTU members.

Houston Union Members Hand Out Books at the COPA Soccer Tournament

The Texas AFL-CIO and Texas AFT partnered this weekend with a Univision station in Houston to promote reading, immigration reform and workers' rights at the Houston edition of the COPA Univision amateur soccer tournament. The event included adult men's and women's and youth teams. During the tournament, several thousand people visited the AFL-CIO/AFT exhibit and volunteers gave out more than 1,800 books to children in attendance. Besides the ice cream truck, the exhibit was the second most popular, said Joe Arabie of the Texas AFL-CIO.

AFT Helps Put Books in Homes

Children who grow up in homes with books, research shows, have much higher reading scores and go farther in the education system than others. But many children can’t get books at home because their families just don’t have the money or have other problems. The AFT partners with First Book to help reduce the achievement gap between low-income and middle-class students. First Book has distributed more than 90 million new books to children across the United States, many of whom could not afford them.

One Year Later, 'Reconnecting McDowell' Shows Progress in West Virginia

AFT is part of an exciting public-private partnership to improve educational, social and economic support for McDowell County, W.Va.

In March 2012, the AFT helped lead a public-private partnership to help struggling McDowell County, W.Va., and the participants were hopeful that things could be turned around economically and educationally. A year later, the Reconnecting McDowell project has begun to show that investment in communities can change people's lives.

Louisiana Teachers and Union Members to Distribute 50,000 Free Textbooks

Students at the 19 schools in Jefferson Parish, La., are getting more than 50,000 new books and, best of all, those books are free. Last week, the Jefferson Federation of Teachers (an AFT affiliate), union and community volunteers began sorting the 2,000 boxes of books that will be distributed during the next month. The book distribution is part of a nationwide joint project between AFT and First Book, a nonprofit organization that distributes books to children from low-income families
