IAFF on Colorado, New Mexico Fires’ Front Lines

Several hundred members of the Fire Fighters (IAFF) from locals surrounding the wildfires in Colorado and New Mexico are working hard to contain the blazes. Fortunately, there have been no reports of major firefighter injury. IAFF 9th District Vice President Randy Atkinson says:

Getting a wildfire under control in that part of the state is difficult because of the tough terrain. There are a lot of canyons, so just getting to the fire is a challenge.

New Santa Fe Worker Center Protects Rights for All Workers

The Santa Fe, N.M., community and immigrant rights group, Somos Un Pueblo Unido, recently opened a new Worker Center. Somos worked closely with the Northern New Mexico Central Labor Council, the New Mexico Federation of Labor (NMFL) and Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ) in establishing the center, which will be vital to the group’s mission to promote worker and racial justice.

New Mexico Unemployed Workers Organize to Fight for Jobs

New Mexico Wants to Work, an organization that advocates for the needs of the unemployed in central New Mexico, held a meeting with dozens of jobless workers in Albuquerque to launch a statewide Where Are the Jobs?” campaign. Together with the New Mexico Federation of Labor, Central New Mexico Labor Council, Working America and AFL-CIO Community Services, we kicked off our statewide program in which unemployed workers and their community partners will ask New Mexico’s citizens to sign petitions and ask elected officials to focus their efforts on finding and creating good jobs.

Court Slaps Down N.M. Gov.’s Labor Board Firings

A unanimous New Mexico State Supreme Court said Wednesday that tea party Republican Gov. Susana Martinez overstepped her authority when earlier this year she fired two members and the executive director of Public Employee Labor Relations Board. The New Mexico Federation of Labor (NMFL) filed suit against Martinez’s action.
