Forever 21 Is Forever Wrong as It Slashes Hours and Health Care Benefits for Full-Time Workers

A group of workers at the mall fixture Forever 21 clothing stores might be stuck forever in poverty without health insurance and paid time off now that execs at the trendy youth fashion chain have decided to reclassify some of the full-time sales, stock and maintenance workers, along with cashiers and other store employees, as part-time workers, allowed just 29.5 hours of work a week.

The outrage over the cold, corporate move is flooding the Forever 21 Facebook page , with most vowing never to shop at Forever 21—well, forever.

IUPAT Facebook Campaign Raises Money for Children with Cerebral Palsy

“Being in a union is more than just looking out for us, we have to look out for the communities not only where we work, but where we live,” says Painters and Allied Trades ( IUPAT ) General President Kenneth Rigmaiden.

Last fall, IUPAT kicked off a campaign that would donate a dollar for each new “Like” for its foundation’s Facebook page. IUPAT’s foundation, Painters and Allied Trades for Children’s Hope ( PATCH ), presented a check for $10,000 to United Cerebral Palsy earlier this year.

Bo Johnson defines it differently. Social media, specifically text messaging, "is the single best way for us to get the word out to our members," says the vice president of the Paducah-based Western Kentucky AFL-CIO Area Council .

OK, Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg didn’t say “join a union.” But that’s the message the vast majority of working women should be considering this Women’s History Month. The best way for most women to improve their working lives is through a union.   

The new PBS documentary, " Makers: Women Who Make America ,"  shows how the women's movement changed the workplace for women, men and families. Two of the young "Makers" highlighted in the film, Sandberg at Facebook and Marissa Mayer at Yahoo, now dominate the news. Here's what neither of them tell you: Union women earn more than nonunion women and have better benefits and working conditions.

The new initiatives are part of the union movement’s continous efforts to reach out to the Latino workforce, especially younger workers. We want to hear stories from Latino workers and forge new ways to work together for workplace and social justice.

Tom Dalzell is business manager and financial secretary of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1245, which represents electrical workers in the state of Nevada (excluding Las Vegas) and Northern California. He describes how online organizing complements traditional organizing—and why both need to work together.

When I started with the United Farm Workers of America in 1972, some of the old hands taught me a trick: Before you organize people, you have to meet them. To meet them, you have to know where they are. Back then, that meant fields, parking lots where crews gather in the morning, their homes  and the occasional bar. Now, with more than 500 million people on social networks like Facebook, that means going online.
