$8 an Hour Won’t Shut Her Up

Shenita Simon is a shift supervisor at a New York City KFC. The mother of two started out at $7.25 an hour two years ago and now earns $8 an hour. Taking part in the nationwide wave of fast-food strikes earlier this month, she tells BillMoyers.com:

$7.25 is not enough for the workers. They gave me $8 to shut me up. But obviously it’s not working….It’s a struggle, a great struggle.

Moyers and Company Make Scary Journey Through the ‘United States of ALEC’

Starting this weekend on PBS stations across the country, Moyers and Company will air “United States of ALEC.” (Find the date and airtime in your area.) The American Legislative Exchange Council describes itself as a “nonpartisan public-private partnership.” But “United States of ALEC” finds that:

No doubt these are tough times for working families and their unions. This weekend, Bill Moyers speaks about the unbridled influence of Big Business and its effects on the labor movement with two labor activists who have been part of the movement for many years.

Bill Fletcher Jr., AFGE Field Services and Education Director and author of the forthcoming book, They’re Bankrupting us—and 20 Other Myths About Unions, and Stephen Lerner, who worked with AFL-CIO President Emeritus John Sweeney at SEIU to create that union’s Justice for Janitors movement, will be on the PBS show “Moyers & Company.”
