Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid aren't just numbers on a budget line, they're vital family protection lifelines for working people. 

Did you know 55.4 million Americans across the United States receive monthly Social Security checks, including 8.6 million workers with disabilities and 4.4 million children? A total of 48.7 million Americans get their health care coverage from Medicare and 64.4 million Americans get their health care coverage from Medicaid, including 29.8 million children and 4.2 million seniors.

Hundreds of union members are running for elective office this year. Some are first-timers running for local office. Others are incumbents seeking re-election to the U.S. Senate. We've examined a few of these brave individuals willing to fight for working families, such as Mike Michaud (running for Maine governor), Mark Schauer (running for Michigan governor) and  Don Norcross (running for New Jersey's 1st Congressional District). Here are a few other key races where union members are running.

United We Dream's Christina Jimenez Wins 2014 Edna Award

The managing director of United We Dream, Cristina Jimenez, won the 2014 Edna Award, which honors women ages 35 or younger who are leaders in the social justice movement. The award, which comes with a $10,000 prize, is named for Edna Berger, the first woman organizer of The Newspaper Guild. Jimenez was an important leader in the fight that led to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
