Indiana Workers Continue Monthlong Capitol Vigil

Today marks the 23rd day Indiana teachers, public employees and other workers have been at the state Capitol protesting more than 30 bills backed by Republican lawmakers and Gov. Mitch Daniels (R). The legislative package includes bills that slash public school budgets, defund women’s health care and eliminate public-sector unions.

AFT’s Weingarten Proposes New Teacher Evaluation Rules

AFT President Randi Weingarten yesterday proposed a new way to align teacher development and evaluation with due process for tenured teachers. The three-step plan includes clear standards for what teachers should know and be able to do, a time-limited improvement and a support plan for teachers deemed to be unsatisfactory, according to the evaluation standards and a hearing process.

AFL-CIO and Chamber Agree on Obama’s Call for Infrastructure Rebuild

Today, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue issued a rare joint statement supporting “Obama’s call to create jobs and grow the U.S. economy through investment in our nation’s infrastructure.” Trumka and Donohue said:
