Republican Tax Plan: Richest 1% Get $50,660 More than Under Obama’s Plan

There are responsible tax cuts—and then there are tax giveaways for the already really rich.

In discussions over extending the Bush tax cuts, Republicans propose massive tax giveaways for the wealthy while the middle- and lower-income families would pay slightly more, according to a new analysis by Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP).

Job Killer? The Media Buy the Lie That Democrats Are to Blame

Job Killer? The Media Buy the Lie That Democrats Are to Blame

The media is more likely to define a presidential administration as a “job killer” if it’s Democratic, according to an independent study released this week, and in 91.6 percent of the stories alleging that a government policy was a “job killer,” the news media failed to cite any evidence for this claim.

U.S. Net Worth Drops, Republicans in Congress Make Matters Worse

New data showing U.S. median net worth plunged by nearly 40 percent following the not-so-Great Recession is getting big media play today. Pundits are shocked—which gated communities do they live in again?—but the Federal Reserve figures showing individuals’ net worth dropped from $126,400 in 2008 to $77,300 in 2010 doesn’t come as a surprise to most Americans. They’ve been struggling to find jobs in an economy where there still are more than three job seekers for ever one available.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are holding hostage the America Dream.

Romney Wants Fewer Teachers, Firefighters? Here's What Will Happen

Laughs with the President

AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker, left, with Wall Street Journal reporter Melanie Trottman

By all accounts, President Obama outshone comedian Jimmy Kimmel when it came to generating laughs during the annual White House Correspondents' dinner Saturday night. AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker (left, with Wall Street Journal reporter Melanie Trottman) was among those taking part, as were Republican congressional leaders, whom Obama thanked “for taking time from their exhausting schedule of not passing any laws” to attend the dinner.

Student Loan Interest Rates Set to Double Without Congressional Action

Today in his weekly address to the nation, President Obama reiterated his call to Congress to act quickly to prevent interest rates on student loans for some 7.5 million students from doubling on July 1.

Instead, over the past few years, Republicans in Congress have voted against new ways to make college more affordable for middle-class families, and voted for huge new tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires—tax cuts that would have to be paid for by cutting things like education and job-training programs that give students new opportunities to work and succeed.
