Romney Plan: Hike Middle Class Taxes, Outsource Jobs

Those of us in the middle and working classes will see our taxes raised big time if Mitt Romney is elected president, according to a new report released today by the Center for America Progress at a day-long event examining Romney’s proposals. Romney is proposing a set of so-called tax reforms that would increase taxes for 18 million working families, meaning an average income couple with two kids would pay $850 per year more in taxes.

In sharp contrast, Romney would gain $4.5 million in tax cuts in just the first year, and rake in more than $100 million in tax breaks over his lifetime (click chart at left to expand).

Romney's Record as Governor: F Minus

Romney's Record as Governor: F Minus

At a time when creating jobs in this nation is top priority, Mitt Romney is running for president on a record in which Massachusetts under his years as governor was 47th in job creation. Worse, Romney apparently didn’t care—when state customer service call center jobs were outsourced to India, Romney vetoed legislation to stop the practice.

This and more info on the Romney record are available at our new Meet Mr. 1% website.

Can Obama Win Back the Youth Vote?

This is a cross-post from The Huffington Post by Amy B. Dean, a fellow at The Century Foundation and co-author of A New New Deal: How Regional Activism Will Reshape the American Labor Movement.

In 2008, young people in America—including many who voted in their first presidential election—rallied behind a youthful senator from Illinois campaigning on the promise of change and hope. Now the incumbent in the White House, Barack Obama, faces a difficult challenge in recapturing the youth vote for his re-election. Early this month, The New York Times reported that enthusiasm for Obama among voters aged 18 to 24 has fallen sharply since the past election cycle. And many of the young people interviewed in the article spoke of feeling alienated from politics.

So what is behind young people's disaffection? And what must President Obama do if he is serious about winning back the country's youth?

Romney’s Tax Plan Is a Giveaway for the Wealthy at the Expense of the Middle Class

Romney’s Tax Plan Is a Giveaway for the Wealthy at the Expense of the Middle Class

Washington Post’s Ezra Klein pointed out yesterday that the difference between Mitt Romney and President Obama’s tax plans is pretty stark.

Klein writes:

Romney’s plan is a large tax cut for the top 60 percent, a huge tax cut for the top few percent, and a significant tax increase for the bottom few percent, as he permits a few temporary tax breaks that benefit low-income folks to expire. Obama’s plan keeps the current tax rates for almost everyone but the top few percent, who face a very large tax increase.

Mitt Romney: Meet Mr. 1%

Check out our new website Meet Mr. 1% at www.aflcio.org/meetromney

Mitt Romney made a wad of cash—$255 million—by laying off American workers and shipping U.S. jobs overseas.

Now he wants to give millionaires and billionaires more tax cuts they don't need—tax cuts that didn’t create jobs the first time around—while hurting the rest of us.

Meet Mr. 1% is our new website with infographics and a video you can share on FacebookTwitter and Pinterest.

Trumka: Mitt Romney 'Doesn’t Know a Thing About Responsibility'

Mitt Romney “doesn’t know a thing about responsibility,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will tell delegates of the Heat and Frost Insulators today in Las Vegas at their 2012 convention. Romney’s plan to better the wealthiest 1% of taxpayers at the expense of the middle class is not the kind of America we want.

It’s been made abundantly clear in recent weeks that Mitt Romney doesn’t share the values the majority of American workers hold.

Poll: 83% of U.S. Voters Negatively View Corporations that Outsource to China

U.S. voters across the political spectrum overwhelming have negative views of companies that outsource jobs to China and strongly support Buy America provisions, according to a poll released today by the Alliance for American Manufacturing. Obama Tax Cut Plan Exposes Republican Bias for 1%

Last night’s “Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” had a good breakdown of why Republicans in Congress are likely to fight President Obama’s proposal to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire on income higher than $250,000.

In urging Congress to take action on what lawmakers can agree on—allowing Bush tax cuts to remain in place for everyone except those in the top tax bracket—Obama is pushing for a one-year extension of Bush tax cuts for incomes under $250,000. If Mitt Romney is elected, it's likely the American public would see him and Republicans in Congress cut taxes for their wealthy buddies by reinstating Bush's tax breaks for them.

President Obama Calls to End Bush-era tax cuts for Americans Making More than $250,000 a Year

President Obama called for a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for Americans making less than $250,000 a year while ending the tax cuts for the wealthiest two percent of Americans. This is a sharp contrast to Republicans in Congress who are calling for an extension of the tax cuts for all tax brackets—even for millionaires and billionaires.

Romney Wants to Take Away Health Care from Millions of Americans

Mitt Romney was for health care reform before he was against it—like just about every issue he’s taken multiple positions on.

Today, Romney declared he would repeal the nation’s health care reform law even though it was upheld this morning by the U.S. Supreme Court.

In doing so, Romney would take away health care coverage from more than 3.1 million young adults covered under their parents’ plans and put at risk more than 105 million Americans who are now benefiting from the elimination of lifetime limits and the coverage of preventive services without cost-sharing.
