The "right to work" for less bill is now "on the table" in Michigan.

For months and months, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has been playing Switzerland on the topic of "right to work" for less (RTWFL)—the Orwellian-named anti-labor union drive—saying, "It's not on my agenda" but never promising to veto RTWFL legislation. He literally used that exact phrase every single time he was asked about it right up until this past week.

This week, all of that changed. After a meeting with top Republican leaders from the state House and Senate, it's now "on the table."

Hundreds of Michiganders flooded the state Capitol building in Lansing on Thursday to tell their legislators to reject a "right to work" for less proposal currently before a legislative committee. Working families oppose the legislation that would make it easier for corporations to take advantage of their employees and weaken workers' ability to bargain with management.

Ann Arbor, Mich., resident Henry Greenspan explained in a recent letter to the editor in the Lansing State Journal that state legislators trying to enact a "right to work" for less law are not looking out for the best interests of working families.

Now that the Republican National Convention—with its divisive policies, masked by a cynical call for unity—has wrapped up, let’s take a look at the deeply embedded anti-union and anti-worker philosophy in the Republican platform of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. Daily Kos’ Laura Clawson says:

The basic message of the Republican platform on labor issues is this: Rights are there to be taken from workers and given to the 1 percent.

Those of us in the middle and working classes will see our taxes raised big time if Mitt Romney is elected president, according to a new report released today by the Center for America Progress at a day-long event examining Romney’s proposals. Romney is proposing a set of so-called tax reforms that would increase taxes for 18 million working families, meaning an average income couple with two kids would pay $850 per year more in taxes.

In sharp contrast, Romney would gain $4.5 million in tax cuts in just the first year, and rake in more than $100 million in tax breaks over his lifetime (click chart at left to expand).

New Hampshire House Speaker Bill O'Brien's dictatorial attitude hasn't helped him pass "right to work" for less laws, collective bargaining restrictions or a voter ID law. Now that heavy hand appears to be coming back to haunt him in major ways.

Just as a burglar prefers the dark of night and avoids well-lighted homes, Minnesota state Rep. Mark Buesgens (R) tried to skulk through the 2 a.m. dark of night last week to revive a so-called right to work bill that has been stalled after a massive outcry from working families and their allies.

While anti-worker bills in state capitols across the country still threaten middle-class families, Republican state legislatures are beginning to second guess whether to continue pursuing their extreme agenda attacking working families.

Yesterday morning, the Republican-controlled New Hampshire Senate tabled HB 1677, the so-called “right to work” bill.  This bill is the pet of Speaker Bill O’Brien, dubbed by a recent Concord Monitor editorial as a “self-drawn caricature of vindictiveness and power run [amok].”  “Right to work” failed last year, and so far this year it has failed to muster a veto-proof majority.
