Missouri union members, senior citizens, faith leaders and community groups have been trying for weeks and months to meet with their congressman, Republican Rep. Todd Akin, and ask him why he opposes Social Security and Medicare and his failure to support legislation that would get Missourians back to work. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a group New Hampshire seniors, including members of the Alliance for Retired Americans , that he supports raising the retirement age or cutting benefits as opposed to asking all taxpayers to pay a fair share to strengthen Social Security.
Texas Governor and newly hatched Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry yesterday found a unique way to avoid answering a New Hampshire voter’s question about Perry’s claim that Social Security is “unconstitutional.” He stuffed his mouth so full of a traditional New Hampshire popover, he couldn’t talk, reports ABC News .
Members of the Alliance for Retired Americans are sponsoring a series of events nationwide to let their lawmakers know the money working people depend on in Medicare and Social Security belongs to those who contributed to the programs, not to politicians in Washington who want to use it as a piggy bank. The events come as Social Security celebrates its 76th anniversary Aug. 14.
At more than 100 events across the country today, workers, students, seniors and health care, civil rights and faith activists are demanding a debt deal that protects seniors and the middle class while making sure the rich and corporations pay their fair share.
Seniors across the country are marching and lobbying to make sure lawmakers don’t use the debate on the debt ceiling as an opportunity to cut Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.
It’s been four years since low-wage workers got a raise. Sign the petition to tell Congress it’s time to raise the minimum wage.
