With more than 100,00 working men and women at the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison yesterday, demanding their right to bargain collectively for middle-class jobs and lives, their action was echoed across the country with rallies in 50 states. And the fight continues.

Early Friday, the Wisconsin Assembly passed Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) bill taking from most public employees the right to bargain collectively for good jobs, according to numerous news sources.

Kamal Abbas, general coordinator of the independent Egyptian Centre for Trade Unions and Workers Services (CTUWS), has sent an amazing message of solidarity to U.S. workers under assault by CEO-backed governors and state legislators.

Wisconsin’s public employees have agreed to Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) demands for pension and health care concessions–but they won’t give up their right to bargain collectively, says Mary Bell, Wisconsin Education Association Council president.

The Greater Madison (Wis.) Chamber of Commerce has slammed the “adversarial way elected officials are approaching” public employees in Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) assault on good jobs and collective bargaining rights. Here’s part of the statement:

The GMCC supports the work to address the state budget deficit and the efforts toward improving the state’s economy.  That support ends at the adversarial way elected officials are approaching it.  Public policy issues of this magnitude should not be rushed through the legislative process.  Given this state’s long history of collective bargaining, policy changes of this magnitude should be thoroughly debated for an adequate period of time, in good faith by both sides, with all potential consequences considered.  Currently, that is not happening.

Tracy Fuller, executive board president of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association, says in a statement on the association’s website that he regrets the endorsement by the Wisconsin Troopers Association of Gov. Scott Walker.

Wisconsin Democratic state senators who fled the state to block Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) union busting said today they have “no plans to return to the state until Walker could reach a reasonable negotiation with state employees.” Republican politicians and conservative commentators have lambasted the state senators all week for their supposed “dereliction of duty.” But those in the Party of Lincoln should look to the 16th president before they criticize the Wisconsin Democrats.

Sixty-thousands working people were at the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison yesterday continuing the massive protests against Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) assault on middle-class jobs and workers’ collective bargaining rights–and they’re coming back again today. Between 1,000 and 2,000 tea partiers turned out yesterday–but guess who got the big media coverage?

Wisconsin Gov. Walker will appear on Fox News Sunday today to defend his assault on middle-class jobs and workers’ right to bargain collectively. (Check local listings for time and station.)
