Union Members Hard at Work During Hurricane Sandy

Working people up and down the East Coast are pitching in to alert people about the clean up efforts for Hurricane Sandy and provide information for transportation, shelter and other resources. Firefighters, public employees, utility workers, letter carriers, nurses, grocery store employees, hotel workers and others continued to work through the storm to make sure everyone is taken care of. Once again, we’re reminded that work connects us all, and we’re better together. Here are some unions and agencies you can follow on Twitter and Facebook who've been hard at work during the storm:

APRI Outreach Explains Ballot Initiatives to Arizona Voters

After the Sunday afternoon service at Grace Temple Baptist Church in Tucson, Ariz., a crowd of more than 30 churchgoers filed into the adjacent hall for a voter education forum presented by the A. Philip Randolph Institute’s (APRI's) Southern Arizona chapter. The crowd was a mix of young voters and those who’d been voting since before the 1965 Voting Rights Act was passed. It was a chance for everyone to learn the ins and outs of various ballot initiatives, as well as how and where they could vote early.

AFGE Elects Cox as New President

J. David Cox was elected AFGE president yesterday by delegates to the union’s convention in Las Vegas. Cox, who served the past six years as AFGE’s secretary-treasurer, succeeds John Gage, who retired after serving nine years in the top job. Eugene Hudson Jr. was elected secretary-treasurer and Augusta Thomas was re-elected vice president for Women´s and Fair Practices.

As Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan travel the country peddling their budget that would decimate Medicare, cut Social Security and give millionaires more tax breaks they don't need, union activists are reminding voters what their economic plans mean for working families. AFGE and other unions protested outside Sheldon Adelson's Venetian hotel and casino in Las Vegas, Nev., yesterday during a Paul Ryan fundraiser.

AFGE, TSA Reach First-Ever Contract for Airport Screeners

In 2003, as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers at several airports were readying to vote on joining AFGE, the Bush administration, citing so-called “national security” concerns, terminated the screeners’ collective bargaining rights.

Today, after a nearly 10-year battle, AFGE and the TSA have reached their first-ever labor contract and it covers the TSA’s 45,000 workers.

Here’s a look at other reactions to today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act, including the requirement to purchase health insurance.

At a time when so many Americans are struggling to get by and students continue to graduate from college with a mountain of debt and few job prospects, this law puts health care within reach for working families, keeps our communities healthier and ensures that Americans can get the treatment they need, when they need it, without battling big insurance companies. We need to work together to build upon the success of the Affordable Care Act, not prolong partisan attempts to tear it apart.

AFGE’s Cox Named New Veterans Council Chair

AFGE Secretary-Treasurer J. David Cox has been named new chair of the AFL-CIO Union Veterans Council. He previously served as the council’s vice chair. The Union Veterans Council focuses on veterans’ issues and advocates public policies to improve the quality of life for U.S. veterans and their families. The two primary areas of focus for veterans are access to good jobs and to quality health care. Cox says:

The care of our nation’s veterans is of utmost importance to me. They have sacrificed so much to this country.
