Nurses and members of National Nurses United (NNU) know that if Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits are cut, people they care for every day will be hurt. This is why across the United States and in Washington, D.C., NNU is running bus ads as part of a national campaign telling Congress not to push seniors off of the so-called "fiscal cliff."

The recovery from Superstorm Sandy could be one of the most expensive in American history, with estimates climbingtoward the $50 billion mark in property damage alone. As Americans all across the country pitch in, most of the work repairing and rebuilding the storm-ravaged areas will be done by talented and hardworking union members. Many of the organizations dealing with Sandy’s devastation emphasize the importance of union workers’ expertise and skill, as well as of sufficient government financial support for rebuilding physical structures and roads and, in many cases, people's lives. Here is what our members have been doing to help with the recovery:

Working people up and down the East Coast are pitching in to alert people about the clean up efforts for Hurricane Sandy and provide information for transportation, shelter and other resources. Firefighters, public employees, utility workers, letter carriers, nurses, grocery store employees, hotel workers and others continued to work through the storm to make sure everyone is taken care of. Once again, we’re reminded that work connects us all, and we’re better together. Here are some unions and agencies you can follow on Twitter and Facebook who've been hard at work during the storm:

Registered nurses at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas, voted by nearly 2-to-1 last week to join the National Nurses Organizing Committee-Texas, the Texas affiliate of National Nurses United (NNU). NNOC-Texas will represent some 500 RNs at the hospital. 

In a major win for nurses, patients and three Texas communities, registered nurses (RNs) in El Paso, Corpus Christi and Brownsville gave final approval to contracts yesterday in first-ever collective bargaining agreements, reports National Nurses United (NNU). 

Workers in Mississippi and Brooklyn, N.Y., and registered nurses in West Virginia and Ohio scored big recently when they won a voice at work with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and National Nurses United (NNU).

Michael Moore’s 2007 film "SiCKO" brought the story of America’s broken health care system to startling light with the sometimes tragic stories of those the system failed and the big insurance companies and pharmaceutical corporations that made hundreds of billions of dollars. Moore and many of those from the film will hold a five-year "SiCKO" reunion tomorrow night in Philadelphia, just two days after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act.

At a time when so many Americans are struggling to get by and students continue to graduate from college with a mountain of debt and few job prospects, this law puts health care within reach for working families, keeps our communities healthier and ensures that Americans can get the treatment they need, when they need it, without battling big insurance companies. We need to work together to build upon the success of the Affordable Care Act, not prolong partisan attempts to tear it apart.

Registered nurses at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis voted by a 2-to-1 margin to join the National Nurses Organizing Committee-Missouri (NNOC-Missouri), an affiliate of National Nurses United (NNU). The Des Peres nurses are the second unit of nurses at a St. Louis Tenet Healthcare hospital to vote NNOC-Missouri this month, joining 600 nurses at Saint Louis University Hospital who chose the union.
