L.A. Transit Agency Program Will Create 260,000 Construction Jobs

Working people are applauding the Los Angeles County Metro Board of Directors vote last week in favor of a sweeping, agency-wide program that will create 260,000 construction jobs. Officials said the program will dramatically increase the number of workers hired from communities near upcoming transit projects and special attention will be given to applicants who live in areas of high unemployment.

Bayer Workers Fight to Keep Promised Jobs

Two years after being granted tax subsidies in exchange for creating family-supporting jobs, management at Bayer Pharmaceuticals in Berkeley, Calif., steadfastly refuses to keep its commitment. Instead, it wants to outsource work done by members of International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 6.

Support Postal Workers: Join Sept. 27 Rallies to Save 120,000 Jobs

In every state across the country, members of the postal unions and community supporters will rally tomorrow, Sept. 27, in a national day of action to protect the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and save 120,000 jobs. Most rallies will take place from 4–5:30 p.m. local time.

IAM: Documents Prove Boeing Out to Punish Workers for Strike

The Machinists (IAM) local that has charged the Boeing Co. with unfair labor practices for opening a second assembly line at a plant in South Carolina has unveiled selected internal company documents the union says shows the company moved the work to punish workers for exercising their right to strike.

Solis to Headline Next Up Summit Panel

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis will headline a panel, along with AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler at the second annual AFL-CIO Next Up Young Workers Summit beginning later this week. Since taking office in 2009, Solis, the daughter of union members, has changed the direction of the Labor Department from one that favored employers to one that protects working people.
