Eligibility and Evaluation Criteria

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Individuals who were awarded a high school degree between Jan. 1, 2013 and July 1, 2013.

Applicants must be dependent children or grandchildren (as defined by IRS regulations) of current or retired members of AFL-CIO unions from the U.S. and its territories. Applicants may also be union members themselves or a spouse of an eligible union member. At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant’s spouse or legal caregiver. The one-year membership minimum must be satisfied by July 1, 2013.

Current members of an eligible community organization.

The applicant must be accepted into a U.S.-accredited college or university, community college or technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. Awards must be used for the 2013-2014 school year.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

This is a competitive scholarship and applicants are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor.

Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

A completed application will include:

One letter of reference (in .doc or .pdf format) from a teacher or other adult who is familiar with your achievements and abilities.

One essay of approximately 500 words.

Union or community organization information, including the national or international union name, local union number, local union’s address, phone number and the local union’s president or business manager. If there are multiple union affiliations, the above information must be provided for each affiliation.

If applying under the community member category, you will need to provide the details of your membership in an eligible community organization as well as a letter from the organization describing your involvement.

The application deadline was 12 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 1, 2013.
