Executive Council Statement | Better Pay and Benefits

Celebrating the Life of OPCMIA President Patrick Finley

We celebrate the life of Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association (OPCMIA) President Patrick D. Finley.

Like the union he served as president, Pat exemplified hard work and professionalism. He valued cutting-edge, top-notch training, and he bargained hard to win good pay and quality benefits for OPCMIA members. He led a proud and effective union, and played an important role in the American labor movement. He received many awards, including the 2015 Labor Leader of the Year from the Washington Friends of Ireland.

Pat understood solidarity and the importance of working for a better life. About 37 years ago, he got his union card as a cement mason and member of Local 592. He worked his way through the ranks of the local—from organizer to executive board member to administrator of the pension, health and welfare funds. In 1995, he became deputy international representative and eventually was elected secretary-treasurer. In 2007, he rose to the presidency, a job he held until his untimely death at the age of 64.

Pat was well loved, and his personality, heart and hard work will be missed. We are all better off because of his service.
